Elote

As corn and agave are the essence of rural Mexico, Elote honors the importance of both to our heritage, culture and daily life. Dried kernels of heirloom corn are toasted on a comal and placed in the still with Espadín to infuse its flavor during the second distillation. The result is  a clear joven mezcal with a subtle Mexican corn flavor. The adding of another ingredient before final distillation is typical of a traditional celebration mezcal. Unique to our family, Elote is our celebration mezcal.

Espadín by Emigdio

Crafted in the rich, fertile Miahuatlán valley, Don Emigdio’s Espadín is a wonderful expression of a saline and mineral-driven style, due to the layer of caliche in the soil surrounding his palenque, a flavor profile indicative of the region. Extra roasting time, terroir, and masterful skill gives Don Emigdio’s Espadín a well-balanced smokiness with notes of cooked sugar, honey, mint, granite, and salt air.

Espadín by Joel

Produced in the high desert oasis of Hacienda Tapanalá, Don Joel uses natural spring water during fermentation and takes a slightly deeper distillation cut, resulting in the brightest, fruit-forward mezcals in Vago’s lineup, with notes of honey, grilled pineapple, caramelized banana, and lime.

Ensamble en Barro

Each Ensamble represents a one-of-a-kind blend that will never be replicated, resulting in a flavor unique to that batch, making every bottle a homage to Tío Rey’s craft and tradition. Using ancestral techniques, Tío Rey hand mashes cooked agave with wooden mallets and distills in a series of clay pots. The more tropical environment of Sola de Vega delivers complex notes of wet soil, dried stone fruits, and honey, each which vary per batch.

Our Commitment

At Mezcal Vago, we celebrate the vital connection between bats, agave, and the larger ecosystem. Bat-Friendly is a conservation program created by UNAM to recognize Tequila and Mezcal brands that are working to create methods of production that maintain healthy populations of nectar – feeding bats. These small but incredible creatures are the main pollinators of agave plants, feeding at night on the nectar-rich flowers at the top of the stalk (quiote). By allowing some of our plants to flower rather than harvesting them for mezcal, we are helping to maintain a healthy genetic diversity among agave populations, as the bats cross-pollinate flowers during their feeding process. This project helps us work to maintain a healthy ecosystem, as the bats will also pollinate other flowering plants in the surrounding environment. A healthy bat population is vital to a healthy agave population.
